Adopt-A-School-Trustee Program

BACI has launched an Adopt-a-School-Trustee program.

The purpose of the program is to create lasting relationships between parents and school Trustees and help participating Trustees understand what challenges, barriers, and opportunities exist for children with disabilities. We are also interested in learning about what challenges school Trustees face as they try and balance the diverse interests of all people in the school system.

BACI made a presentation to the Burnaby School Board on April 11, 2006, and received a positive response from Trustees. Families were identified to participate and they selected a Trustee with whom they wished to be matched.

Most Trustees have now been matched with families and have begun meeting. The families are hoping that the relationships will last until the end of the Trustee’s term.

"We are encouraged by the interest shown by some Trustees so far," said Tanya Sather, Executive Director of BACI. She went on to say that, "we believe that much can be learned from parents when it comes to the needs of children who have extra challenges. We hope that families and Trustees will develop a relationship over time that will promote a better understanding about disability issues in an educational setting."
