What's New - September 10th, 2010
The Centre for Specialized Learning is Now
Open
The Centre for Specialized Learning is a new centre under the
auspices of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation which delivers
specialized programs in speech, language, reading, social
development, and communication for learners from preschool to
adult. The programs are for people with a variety of developmental
disabilities and the preschool programs also include typical
learners.
We still have space for September 2010 in our Reading and
Communication programs which are a wonderful opportunity for young
adults (age 19-30) who did not learn to read at school, who would
like to increase their reading ability, and for whom increased
social communication is a goal.
These classes have a maximum of 6 students each with one qualified
teacher, a teaching assistant and university student volunteers.
They also work regularly with a speech language pathologist who
facilitates discussion among students and acts as an advisor to the
teacher. Reading and Communication Plus is for students at a grade
one level and up and have a maximum of 8
students.
Our centre programs also include the Early Foundations Preschool
and Learn at Play for the younger children, and Chat Pack a social
communication after school program facilitated by a speech language
pathologist for ages 13-18.
