ADULT & YOUTH SERVICES
Community Day Programs
BACI offers a wide variety of Community Day Programs
– supported work, employment, education/training and
leisure/recreational activities. Programs change to
meet the interests and needs of the people attending them, with the
goal being to support individuals in building the skills and
confidence they need to more fully participate in their
community.
Community Options Day Programs
A variety of activities are provided in small and large groups and
one-to-one settings. Through the planning process, each
individual’s interests, desires, strengths and
abilities are explored and programs developed to meet those needs.
Opportunities to participate in educational activities and other
activities designed to enhance life skills and volunteer
opportunities are provided. BACI’s Day
Programs are located at Antrim, Mary Street and Still Creek, and
typically operate from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Currently, there are 69 individuals being served in the various
programs.
Still Creek Education Center – Supported Work and
Preparation for Work
The Still Creek Education Center offers a variety of work
experience options, education programs and leisure
activities. The number of individuals attending
educational classes and the computer lab has increased to 94 per
semester, with classes running for 3 semesters per
year. Approximately 36 of these individuals do not
receive any funding and use the Education Center as their primary
activity.
While old favorites continue to be offered, many new classes
have been developed, based on feedback from individuals and their
families. Drumming – a class added last year
– continues to be very popular. Some of the
new offerings are functional, such as creating conversation
books. Other classes tap into a person’s
creative side through mosaic tiling, scrap booking and expression
in music. Some focus on individuals’
physical well-being through yoga and low fat/low sugar baking
class.
Twenty individuals are currently volunteering at various
locations in Burnaby – building their skills,
developing relationships and contributing to their community in
meaningful ways. In addition to long-term volunteer
placements at daycares and seniors’ centers, new
volunteer opportunities have included the Red Cross, Sports Chek,
Ceperly Art Gallery, Rev’s Bowling Center, Petcetera,
Maple Wood Farms, and PADS.
Forty-eight individuals continue to be supported in the Action
Packaging area, and 14 individuals at the woodshop.
While there, they develop work-related skills as they experience a
variety of projects.
